published numerous articles on Hamburg-Danish history, including on the field camp Christian IV
in Fuhlsbüttel during Thirty Years War
and about the actions of Crown Prince Friedrich against the recalcitrant lordship Wellingsbüttel
in 1806.For his contributions he has tracked sources in Copenhagen and Krakow, among others.
He has also emerged through publications on the history of German-American emigration. To Hamburg and Holstein 1766 - 1772.Mathias Hattendorff has evaluated mostly unknown sources from the Hamburg State Archives and the Danish Reich Archives for his exciting presentation. He was also able to access important documents from the private archives of the Welfenhaus and the Danish royal family. A rare find from the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle complements the wide range of sources.

Mathias Hattendorff has published many articles in the yearbooks of the Alsterverein
about the danish-depended history of Hamburg, for example about the encampment of King Christian IV
in Fuhlsbüttel (expl.: district of Hamburg) during the Thirty Years' War
and also about the acting of the crown prince Friedrich against the renitent lords of the noble estate of Wellingsbüttel
(expl.: district of Hamburg) in 1806. His articles are among others based on sources from archives in Berlin, Krakau and Kopenhagen.
Besides he wrote, based on a series of old letters, about the history of german-american emigrants. At the same the contents got published in the book Höfische Reglements und Lustbarkeiten - Die Besuche von Caroline Mathilde und Christian VII in Hamburg und Holstein 1766 - 1772 (trsl.: courtly rules and festivities - the visits of Caroline Mathilde and Christian VII in Hamburg an Holstein 1766 - 1772). Mathias Hattendorff mostly used unknown records from Hamburgisches Staatsarchiv (trsl.: state-archives of Hamburg) and the “dänisches Reichsarchiv“ (trsl.: danish state-archives) for his exciting presentation. Besides he could avail important documents from the private archives of the houses respective families of Guelphs and danish royals. A rare find from the royal archives at Windsor Castle completes the wide spectrum of sources.

For his publications he prefers material from unknown sources. To repeat well-known aspects a hundred times again offers no challenge to him.
