For an introduction to the concept of encounter, which the authors have chosen, it seems essential to undertake a brief foray through Buddhism and the countries that embody the core of its tradition today. Myanmar, called “Burma” in the German-speaking area, forms the so-called “small vehicle” of Theravada Buddhism with Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand and the Khmer Empire in Cambodia, ie the area that corresponds to the older term “back India” . The Theravada ("school of the elders" in the central Indian Pali dialect) is the oldest, unmixed school tradition of Buddhism.
Encounters with people from Myanmar - the full-page photos mainly show children and elderly people, monks and people who have been scarred by hard field work and fishing. The accompanying trilingual (German, English and Spanish), short and in-depth texts complement the images and encourage pause and reflection. The author François Maher Presley enters into a kind of dialogue with his words with the scenes depicted here. In the epilogue, Buddhism is explained in its main features and history is sketched out, whereby ethnic tensions and the use of violence by Buddhist monks against Muslims are not excluded. A gift ribbon that can bring you closer to the country and its inhabitants. Traudel Reiss, Buddhismus aktuell 2/2015
