Sebastian Gemkow was born on July 27, 1978 in Leipzig. After graduating from the Neue Nikolaischule, he studied law at the Universities of Leipzig, Hamburg and the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1998 to 2004. After his first state examination in 2004, he completed his legal clerkship in Leipzig and was able to take his second state examination in 2006. As a result, he settled as a lawyer in Leipzig. Sebastian Gemkow has been a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany since 1998. In the state elections in 2009, he succeeded in entering the Saxon state parliament as a direct candidate in the Leipzig 2 constituency. In the 5th Saxon State Parliament he was a member of the committee for science and universities, culture and media and the election examination committee. In 2014 he again succeeded in entering the Saxon state parliament in the constituency of Leipzig 4. On November 13, 2014, Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich appointed Sebastian Gemkow as Saxon State Minister of Justice. Sebastian Gemkow has been President of the Central and Eastern European Parliamentary Forum since 2010, a non-partisan association of Saxon parliamentarians and leaders, which promotes cooperation with decision-makers from Central and Eastern European countries in a broad sense. On March 21, 2014, the Federal Government granted Sebastian Gemkow the exequatur as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Estonia. The consular district comprised the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The honorary consular representation was opened in Leipzig in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia. Sebastian Gemkow held the office until his appointment as Minister of State. In March 2016 Sebastian Gemkow was elected to the board by the general assembly of the German-Russian Forum eV.
